Making it convenient to shift patients from a bed to a trolley, and vice versa, Professor Dr Vinay Midha, Department of Textile Technology, Dr BR Ambedkar NIT, Jalandhar, has invented a ‘Patient Shifting Device’ which he has even got patented.

It’s a user-friendly and low-cost device, which involves converting bedsheets into stretchers and sliding patients from the bed to a trolley and the other way round. The invention provides a patient shifting device that consists of a bedsheet having a plurality of longitudinal sleeves, which lie on both sides of the patient and are capable of receiving a steel rod.

The device of the present invention improves the comfort of the patient and caregivers, and saves time during the process of shifting of patients from an operating table to a trolley, or from a trolley to a bed, and vice versa, with little effort, minimal discomfort and injury to the patient. Professor Midha said he did a pilot study at the CMC Hospital, Ludhiana, and filed a patent for the present invention, which has been recently granted by The Patent Office, Government of India.

Explaining the utility of the device, the professor said: “Transferring of patients in hospitals and other medical facilities is usually performed by partially lifting of the patient and sliding of the patients from one support to another with the help of bedsheets. The transfer during the medical procedures or conduct of tests requires a great effort and time. It’s important to save time of the patients who are admitted in an emergency situation. Caregivers are also subjected to severe strain during the course of transferring/sliding the patient. In certain cases, this transfer process may aggravate the injury of the patient or may lead to an injury to the caregiver.”

He said over the years, various supporting devices or aids have been invented to aid in the process of lifting or sliding patients from one support to the other. “But all these aids are expensive, are not very user-friendly and therefore not used in hospitals of developing countries. This is where this device has an edge,” he said.
